Description: This position will work in the Division of Forestry under
the supervision of a state forest property manager and/or his designee
on state forest holdings. This position manages land, timber, and other
natural resources on state forest holdings. Depending on individual
skills, duties may include timber inventory, development of management
plans, boundary line management, marking timber harvests, timber sale
administration, timber stand improvement, and wildlife management.
This position will be responsible for hardwood forest management in
the heart of the central hardwood region. Indiana’s hardwood forest
products industry is renowned for its high quality products. Indiana’s
hardwood forests are among the most productive and highest quality in
the country. Hardwood forest management requires a skillful mix of forestry
art and science, and provides a challenging opportunity.
Duration: This position is an intermittent appointment. The starting
date is flexible. Traditionally, individuals worked May August
during school summer vacation, depending on individual’s availability.
The work week is Monday Friday, 37.5 hours per week. There is
the possibility of extending position before May and beyond August.
The position is available for 1,350 work hours (about six months with
a normal work schedule).
Location: Positions are located throughout the southern half of the
state.
Wages: $12.00 hourly.
Background: Applicants should have, or be actively pursuing, a minimum
of a bachelor’s degree in Forestry, or have an associate’s
degree in Forestry from a technical school. Applicants should have successfully
completed a minimum course work as follows: forest mensuration, dendrology,
silviculture, and forestry summer camp. A working knowledge of computer
applications such as word processing, database, and spreadsheets is
necessary. Proficiency in written and verbal communication is necessary.
Individual must be a self-motivated person with a strong work ethic
and ability to schedule, on their own, their projects and tasks. The
individual must be able to communicate well with people. This position
requires strenuous physical activity, in rough terrain and all kinds
of weather conditions. A valid Indiana driver’s license is required.
